Upper Elgin Road at Babocomari Creek Bridge

Planning a safer, more reliable crossing while preserving the character and history of the Sonoita Valley.

Area Background

The Upper Elgin Road at Babocomari Creek is in the Town of Elgin in Sonoita Valley, in Santa Cruz County. The Sonoita, Elgin, and Patagonia region are home to cattle ranching, mining, and winemaking.

Elgin is located approximately 62 miles southeast of Tucson, and is the first location in Arizona to engage in commercial-scale winemaking. The expansion of winemaking in the Elgin-Sonoita area has led to the establishment of fine restaurants and bed and breakfasts and has regenerated the economy of this lightly populated rural area. In the 2023 season, visitors to Sonoita and Elgin contributed over $200 million to the local economy.
